The Story Behind Us: Tessa & Matt

How did you meet and when did you both realize your love for travel?

Tessa: We actually met at a bar during happy hour after a couple of tequila shots. We both discovered we loved to travel quickly and within 2 months of meeting we had booked a 6 week backpacking trip to Europe. The funny thing is we wouldn’t leave for another 3 months, I guess we just both hoped we would still be together at that point.
Matt: We also had some tequila shots when we booked the trip to Europe together. It worked out well though!

Where was your first destination together and tell us about it?

Matt: Our first destination together was the Europe trip. We flew into Amsterdam and I had been there before so I took the lead. I could tell we both felt a little unsure about how the other person travels but we quickly realized we both loved doing the same things, exploring a new city all day and night.

How do you share your work on the road? Who does what?

Tessa: Matt is in charge of getting “the shot”, he has the more creative eye and immediately knows how to frame a photo. He is also in charge of getting us places, whether it’s booking a train/plane or renting a car and driving I let him figure it out.
Matt: Tessa is in charge of picture/video editing, social media and writing the content for our blog. She has a great eye for creating content and designing our site. I have no idea how to use squarespace at all.

How do you make decisions together for next destinations?

Tessa: We both are subscribed to Scott Keyes Emails (seriously sign up now he sends out an email a day on amazing locations that have great flight deals) and we just go where ever the best deals is. We both agree that there is pretty much no where we will say no to so it makes it easy.

Have you noticed any changes in the relationship since you started traveling together?

Matt: The only change I have noticed is how little we argue when we aren’t on a trip. Little problems at home are put in such a different perspective when you just faced a big challenge on the road. We are both really good at working together to solve a problem and I think that comes from traveling together so much. Traveling is constant problem solving.

Living and traveling together 24/7 can sometimes be stressful and relate to moments of disagreements or misunderstandings. How do you cope with these situations?

Matt: We are very open. We don’t let an annoyance fester. If something is annoying us we immediately call the other out on it.
Tessa: There is seriously nothing worse than looking back at a city and just remembering being in a fight. Once it happens once you tend to not let it happen again, so we generally just listen and change our actions quickly.

What is the most beautiful moment you have experienced together while traveling?

Tessa: Mine was watching the northern lights from the window of our cabin in Norway. We had both talked about this moment for so long actually seeing the colors moving across the sky was magical.
Matt: The best for me was all the locations we took wedding photos in while we were traveling. It was so surreal to be standing in different countries all dressed up looking at amazing scenery and telling each other how much we love and cherish this relationship.

What do you like the most about traveling as a couple?

Tessa: Seeing everything together with my best friend! There is no one I would rather see the world with.

What do you like the least about traveling as a couple?

Matt: Tessa’s constant singing, no I’m just kidding there really isn’t much I don’t like about traveling with her.
Tessa: He is serious about the singing, I am always singing. Ha!

How do you keep the relationship spark alive on the road?

Matt: It’s honestly not hard. But we constantly remind each other how lucky we are to be traveling together and seeing things that couples dream about.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to any couple wanting to travel together?

Tessa: Just buy the plane ticket and figure it out along the way. If you hate each other by the end (or middle of it) you can always ditch em and buy a plane ticket home.
